Naples attorney Sharon Hanlon was awarded the Donald E. Van Koughnet Lion of the Law Award for professionalism on Oct. 14.

Hanlon, a civil attorney and partner in Zelman & Hanlon in North Naples, will be presented with the award tonight at a celebration at the Port Royal Club attended by her family, lawyers, judges and District Court of Appeals judges.

The annual award is given to a member of the Collier County legal community in recognition for excellence in legal skills, professionalism and public service.

It's named in honor of the late Van Koughnet, a Harvard-educated Washington, D.C., attorney and legal counsel to several presidents who retired and moved to Naples.

Hanlon, who received her juris doctorate from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1982, moved to Naples 10 years later and became active in various legal groups.

She's the founding president of the Collier County Women's Bar Association and is still active with that organization, which named her the Woman Lawyer of the Year in 1999.

She's in her second term as a director of the Collier County Bar Association, has served as the president of the Collier County Trial Lawyers, and is currently the chair of the 20th Judicial Circuit Nominating Commission.

That group reviews nominations and conducts interviews for judicial posts before sending recommendations to the governor.

She's a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers, was recently voted into the SW Chapter for the American Board of Trial Advocates and has served as the membership chair and secretary for the Florida Association of Women Lawyers.

She was also secretary and treasurer of the Thomas M. Biggs American Inns of Court, Collier County chapter.

Last year, the award went to Jeffrey Fridkin.

Past recipients have been: William Keith, Jerry Berry, Jean Rawson, John E. Long Jr., John P. Cardillo, J. Dudley Goodlette, James Elkins, Edward Cheffy and George Vega.
