Uninsured motorist insurance is something that you buy as part of your auto insurance. It provides benefits when you are injured as a result of a motorist's actions.
A bicyclist injured by the actions of a motorist is considered to be a victim of a motor vehicle accident. The bicyclist's auto insurance can be used to compensate the bicyclist for his injuries. This is done through uninsured motorist insurance.
Uninsured motorist insurance is the most important auto insurance you can buy. It protects you from damages caused by a financially irresponsible motorist. Your auto insurer is required to sell you the same amount of uninsured motorist insurance as the amount of bodily injury insurance that you purchase. (Bodily Injury insurance pays others for damages you cause as a motorist.)
Uninsured motorist insurance protects you from damages caused by others. You can't always protect yourself against the recklessness of a motorist. But you can protect yourself from a person who is as financially irresponsible as he is an irresponsible motorist. Buy as much uninsured motorist coverage as you can. It has been my experience that the only bicyclists who are fully compensated after a serious accident are those with uninsured motorist insurance.
